Fuel Economy by Month report

Fuel Economy by Month report

Purpose

The purpose of this report is to display the average fuel economy by month, based on the 'End Date' of the selected date period. This knowledge base article aims to provide clarification on the report's intricacies.

Report Logic

To calculate the average fuel economy, Gearbox determines a vehicle's highest and lowest mileage readings, dividing the former by the latter. Since the creation of a Fuel record for the first day of each month is not guaranteed, Gearbox retrieves the highest mileage reading from the previous month. This value is then subtracted from the highest mileage reading of the reporting month to derive the average fuel economy.
How Gearbox reads Fuel record mileage readings

Fuel Economy by Month report logic

However, if there is a reading on the first of the month, Gearbox will use this Fuel record’s mileage reading as the lowest value and subtract it from the end of the month Fuel record’s mileage reading. This will provide the average distance travelled for the given month.

Example 1

Referring to the diagram above, the vehicle has three Fuel records for December 2019 and three for January 2020. However, since there is no Fuel record for January 1st, 2020, Gearbox utilizes the mileage reading from December 31st, 2019 (257,283 Kms) and subtracts it from the reading on January 31st, 2020 (258,784 Kms), resulting in a distance traveled of 1,501 Kms. Gearbox then calculates the total liters consumed for January 2020.

Using this data, Gearbox divides the distance travelled by the liters of fuel consumed to provide an average fuel economy value of 1.75 Liters consumed per Kilometer.

Example 2

Using Vehicle 1 as an example, the following explanation will detail how Gearbox calculates the values presented in the report.

Fuel Economy August 2019

AUG 2019 Kms = [August Highest KMs Reading] – [July Highest KMs Reading]
AUG 2019 Litres = Sum of all fuel for AUG
AUG 2019 KMs Per Litre = [AUG 2019 Kms] / [AUG 2019 Litres]

Fuel Economy September 2019
SEP 2019 Kms = [September Highest KMs Reading] – [August Highest KMs Reading]
SEP 2019 Litres = Sum of all fuel for SEP
SEP 2019 KMs Per Litre = [SEP 2019 Kms] / [SEP 2019 Litres]

Fuel Economy October 2019
OCT 2019 Kms = [October Highest KMs Reading] – [September Highest KMs Reading]
OCT 2019 Litres = Sum of all fuel for OCT
OCT 2019 KMs Per Litre = [OCT2019 Kms] / [OCT2019 Litres]
